Kaō first appeared in China during the Tang Dynasty,
and began to be used in Japan during the Heian period.
Though their use became far less widespread after the Edo period, they continue to be used even by some contemporary politicians and other famous people. The reading and identification of individual kaō often requires specialist knowledge; whole books devoted to the topic have been published.
Often used by a Japanese swordsmith on sword tang (nakago).

An official document, ending with the Kao signature, given by the Shogun to a retainer when giving him a domain as a new regent or making other promises.

Now it is also an expression of approval.

Inozaki Inari 磯崎稲荷 Inozaki Shrine - 花押

文禄の朝鮮の役(1592)に、磯崎の水主が伊達勢の水軍として高麗に渡ったが、磯崎稲荷も眷属の狐を従えて出陣したといい、肥前の名護屋に滞陣中、その中の1匹が淀君の侍女について侍女が病気になる。それを追い出そうとすると、「われこそは奥州松島は磯崎明神の眷属なるぞ」と力み返ったので、太閤大いに怒り、「汝早々に狐めを退散させずば、やわかそのままに差し置くべき」と、お叱り状に、稲荷太明神殿、太閤秀吉としたため、花押までつけて遣わしたので、狐も逃げ出し、侍女の病気も治ったという。このお叱り状は磯崎稲荷に長く伝えられていた。

德川時代、伊達政宗に滅ぼされたカナガニトウトオミノカミの遺臣淸野孫右衛門が漆沢集落に来て、肝煎になった。その五代目が武家復興を月山権現に念じて二十一日の願掛けをした。途中、痩せた狐の親子に赤飯を振る舞ってやった。満願の日、德川の家老オニコがお墨付きを持って迎えに来て、そのまま道中した。道中は犬止めの禁が出た。新発田街道を通って聖篭で夜が明けると、行列はなく槍だと思っていたのは萱であった。孫右衛門はそのまま落ち延び、息子ともう独り着いていったものは帰ってきた。

Takemikazuchi no mikoto (武甕槌大神)

Tekemikazuchi standing on a catfish- on the famous "key stone""kaname ishi要石".
A giant catfish (namazu 鯰) lived in mud beneath the earth. The catfish liked to play pranks and could only be restrained by 鹿島 Kashima, a deity who protected the Japanese people from earthquakes. So long as Kashima kept a mighty rock with magical powers over the catfish, the earth was still. But when he relaxed his guard, the catfish thrashed about, causing earthquakes.

In the 山武郡 Sanbu district, during the Koshin rituals if people hang a scroll to celebrate, it might bring an earthquake or bad luck. So they finish the rituals fast, drink their sake and put the scolls away as soon as they can. Then they find time to have a feast in peace.

In the Minami Aizu district 南会津郡 at Hinoemata village 檜枝岐村 there are some sayings about the weather.
If there is thunder and earthquake at night, or if the soot at the bottom of the kitchen hearth starts burning whith a flickering flame, getting on and off, then a rain will come, in the form of a kitsune no yome-iri きつねの嫁入り spell of sunshine during a rain.

赤堀家の先祖は三上山のムカデを退治した俵藤太だったので、その恨みを受けて赤堀家の御内室が赤城に登ったときに沼に引き込まれ、大蛇にされた。赤堀氏は妻を見ようとして沼を掘り割ろうとしたが、にわかに天候が荒れて地震が起き、果たせなかった。そのときの堀が赤堀殿の堀の口として残る。以来赤堀姓は赤城山に参ってはいけない。

In 七会村 Nanakai village, at the foot of 八瓶山 Mount Yatsugameyama , when an earthquake occurs, people call out
Manjiroku Manjiroku me o samase マンジロク、マンジロク 目を覚ませ Manjiroku, wake up!
to appease the event. Manjiroku, a very strong man turned Deity will press down the giant catfish or jump at it and bite in its head.
But if he goes to sleep, people have to call out and wake him up.

If during an earthquake the deer are calling, there will be no Tsunami.
If the dear do not call out, there will be a Tsunami.

There are some Kashima Jinja 鹿島神社 to appease the Earthquake Deity.
北山光明寺の丘と堤町日浄寺の丘の間の、梅田川水源の湿地にのぞむ光明寺境内の崎。南面して鹿島神社があるので鹿島ヶ崎という仙台七崎の一。丘の南一帯は田であったが、太古常陸の鹿島から飛来したという七つの大石が点在し、これを地震よけの鹿島の要(かなめ)といった。

At Unzen town 雲仙市, the farmers were suffering from two 大蛇 big serpents.
島原城主に頼んで蛇狩りをして1匹を殺し、1匹に痛手を負わせた。島原城下の杏庵という医者のところに毎夜更けにくる女がいた。女は治療の末完治し、その後杏庵との間に子供ができた。ある時、正体が大蛇だとわかり、子供にくりぬいた片目を残し、去っていった。その後、寛政4年4月4日に眉山が崩れる地震が起きた。眉山の下の蛇町の人は大蛇に逃げ道を阻まれて家にいた人々は命が助かった。地震は蛇の崇りだといわれ、その責を負って島原城主は自害した。

In 上越市 Joetsu in 1751, during the Nadachi kuzure 名立崩れ landslide of Nadachi, a hunter saw a red pole of fire in the far sky. When he ran home to check, it was all safe. But in that night, the home was destroyed by an earthquake.

In 十日町市 Tokamachi during the great earthquake in 1833, at the temple 大照院(大正院)Daisho-In the statue of 不動様 Fudo Myo-O tumbled down and rolled outside. When the people, who had taken shelter in the temple, ran after the statue and outside too, the building collapsed and all were saved by Fudo.

In the 首里 Shuri district of 那覇 Naha, people call out Kyozuka 京塚 three times during an earthquake. There is a real Kyozuka sutra mound in Shuri and earthquakes never happen there, so just to call its name is helpful.
This mound was erected by Saint Nisshu 日秀上人 in 1522, to apease a Yokai monster that haunted the roads of Shuri and 浦添 Urasoe. He wrote the diamond spell of 金剛経文 on small pebbles and placed them there, preparing a mound with a larger stone, inscription 金剛嶺 Mount Diamond.

If during the New Year rituals for Koshin Sama at a private home an earthquake happens, the rituals must be stopped and started again on another day. During an earthquake, Koshin sama will run out of the house and thus there is no point in making offerings to him.

A 25-year-old Buddhist monk was confirmed dead on Oct. 7 after he was found under a collapsed hall of the Naritasan Yokohama Betsuin temple in Yokohama's Naka Ward that was hit by a landslide on Oct. 6.

聖不動威怒明王尊 Statue of Fudo Myo-O
This statue had been lost in a landslide near a hot spring, and been found through a statement in the dream.
The fourth priest of the temple, 乾海和尚 Keikai, took a closer look at it in 1700 and found that the pattern of the halo had been scratched with the pure nails, so he called the statue

Nariaiji Temple (成相寺) is a temple of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. The temple was originally located near the top of Mount Tsuzumigatake overlooking Miyazu Bay in the north, but was moved about 250 years ago to its current location further down the mountain after a landslide. The current temple grounds are still high enough on the slope that there are good viewpoints from where you can look out over the Amanohashidate Sandbar below.

船に乗ろうとする場所で、土砂を少しとって紙に包み、それを臍にあてて乗れば船酔いをしない。冬ならば足袋の裏に敷いておくのもよい。特に神社の土で行えば効果が著しいという。これは海が不浄を嫌うからだという。

In 水戸市 Mito town
稲田姫を祀る小祠の近くで崖崩れがあったので修復しようとしたら、大きな瓶のようなものが出てきた。鍬に当たって欠けた所を拾ってみると大きな歯骨であった。官の検分をうけたところ、瓶は竜頭であると決定した。由縁はわからないが、稲田姫を祀るのはこの竜を鎮めるためだろうかと、その地で仕官している人が語った。

山の小高い所に神さんが住んでいて、村に不幸があるときにはお知らせがある。地滑りの時にも、その二三日前から火の玉が飛び、地滑りの晩は火事のように明くなった。

鳥部野の地蔵山から土砂を採っていたら山の神と呼ばれる松の木の下から壷が出土した。掘り出そうとしたら鳴動して掘っていた人が死んだ。それを聞いた土砂採集の世話人達も病気になり祈祷の甲斐なく死んだ。

1960年ごろのこと。女生徒の間で、谷坂を夕方暗くなってから通るとオジモン(怖いもの)が出る、怪異が起こる、と評判になった。お墓の下を通るときに土砂が落ちてきた、髪の毛が逆立った、などの経験をした女生徒がいた。

カリコボウはいたずら好きで、話し声や木を切り出す音、崖崩れや鉄砲の音を出して人を驚かすが、危害を加えることはない。カリコボウの音は響かないのですぐわかる。カリコボウのいたずらには気づかないふりをしてやりすごすのがよい。

In the 木曽郡 Kiso district
黒川の奥に住んでいた山うばが食物をもらい歩いていたが、上田で石灰の入った餅をもらい、それを食べて腹の中が焼けて死んだ。そのとき、「ウエンダ、ガケになれ、ふちになれ」と叫んだので、水害による土砂崩れが起こった。今でも土手が崩れやすく、水がじゅくじゅく出ている。

ヤマノカミサン(トンチボ)に礼をしようと思い、カミオロシをすると便所、電気、井戸が欲しいといった。感じる場所があり井戸を掘ると龍(大蛇)の骨が出た。630年前に崖崩れで埋まったのだが、世に出たくて掘らせたのだとアリガタヤの師匠が言った。子々孫々の代まで困ったことがあれば相談に来いといった。

Once from the top of the mountain there came a stone falling down and smashed one serpent. Another serpent begun to call out in a loud voice and soon the riverbank collapses, a landslide happened and the mountain made violent noises.
The blood of the snake still colors the stones along the river in red.

ウカガイのS氏は15歳のとき、火の玉が山から凄い速さで飛んで来るのを見た。鉄砲水の折で、逃げようと思い外に出たら家の中からも2つの光の玉が飛んでいき、直後に土砂崩れが起こった。山中の池に住む大蛇の霊と神様が放たれたものだとS氏は言った。

文政8年の春に、熊野本宮社に堤を築こうとして、境内にある大黒島という岩山から採石しようとした。石を切り出そうとすると、作業者が休憩したら、巌上の土砂が崩れてるが、作業中には崩れない。また多くの烏が集まってきた。心弱い人は逃げだしたが、強い人が作業を続けると、土中から瓶が出てきた。その中には黄金の阿弥陀仏が入っていた。

In the 南巨摩郡 Minamikoma district, there was a place in a valley where the woodworkers would come together to have a meal.
One day when it looked like a typhoon approaching, there came a man in white death robes and told them
"Something dangerous will happen soon, so please run away to safety as fast as you can."
Some of the woodcutters took it serious and run away, others kept sitting there munching their rice and the - - - a huge landslide came over them and swept everything down the valley.
They think it was 山の神様の知らせ the Deity of the Mountain who came to warn them.

享保13年7月末、伊勢浦を見たところ、沖のほうに突然大山のようなものが現れた。浦辺の人々は津波だと思い銘々に用意をした。するとその山の様な物は2つに分かれ、一方は東に、もう一方は西へと飛んでいった。その翌日江戸近国では山が破れ水が噴出し江戸が洪水になった。22年前の伊勢御遷宮の際も伊勢浦に同じようなものが現れ東海道が洪水になった。明年は21年目の御遷宮である。何か関係があるのだろうか。

In 石岡市 Ishioka town, a male and female dragon 雄龍と雌龍 were celebrates ad the Deity of the Mountain 山の神様.
あるとき、この龍が女に化けて池に現れ、若侍と出会って、恋仲になった。しかし若侍だけがこの場で死んでしまった。この山を削ると、2頭の龍を分けることになるので、山津波が起こる。これを山上の龍が鱗を逆立てたと言う。

In the 上伊那郡 Kami-Ina district, a legend about Fudo
経平という場所に小堂があったが、山津波で埋没した。年を経て、そこが毎夜光を放ったので、天和元年3月に近隣住民が掘り返した。すると、そこから不動尊の木造が現れたので、現在の場所に安置したという。

In the 南佐久郡 Minami-Saku district, a legend about あかずの観音
現在「観音堂」と呼ばれている所には,江戸中期まで立派な観音堂があった。ところが,ある年山津波でこの堂がつぶれてしまったので,観音様は難を避けるために北佐久郡三井村(現佐久市香坂)の閼伽流山に飛んでいってしまった。以来この観音様を「あかずの観音」と呼んでいる。

島原の領主が雲仙嶽の山林で狩りをした際二匹の大蛇のうち一匹を射止めた後、島原地方一帯の畑が荒らされて作物の収穫が殆ど皆無になった。村人が原因の大蛇の捕獲に失敗した同じ頃、多比良にいた名医は傷を負った女を治療した。医者が助けた女は、連れ合いを殺された復讐に畑を荒らしにきて村人が捕まえそこねた先程の蛇だった。女は近々地震と津波が起こるので島原を離れろと医者に告げた。そして雲仙岳が噴火し、女の言うとおりになった。災害は大蛇の祟りといわれる。

In 佐伯市 Saiki town, a statue of 観音様 Kannon Bosatsu came rolling in during a tsunami. The statue was caught in the net of a fisherman, and its halo was sparkling.
Other versions tell of a tree floating in the waves and when they cut it, blood came flowing out of the cut. So they made a Kannon Statue to appease it.

In 伊良部町 Irabu town, - ningyo 人魚 "human fish" (dugong)
In the village of 白保村 Shiraho there were three families living under arrest. Once they caught a human fish and wanted to eat it. Before they cut it open the fish talked to them and told them of a coming big Tsunami. Afraid they threw the meat back into the sea and apologized for catching the fisl.
And just so, a big Tsunami came and destroyed the whole village. But the homes of these three families were saved.

This was 八重山地震 the Yaeyama Earthquake of 1771, with a Tsunami of 60 meters, killing 1574 people in Irabu alone.



The 1771 Great Yaeyama Tsunami (also called 明和の大津波, the Great Tsunami of Meiwa) was caused by the Yaeyama Great Earthquake at about 8 A.M. on April 24, 1771, south-southeast of Ishigaki Island.

Once a rich family caught a fish called ユナイナマ Yudainama and cut it for a meal.
But this fish is the messenger of the 海神の使者 Deity of the Sea. So the Sea God became angry and sent a Tsunami to destroy the home of the family.

When the fishermen wanted to prepare a meal with the catch of the day, putting one fish on the net for barbeque, there was suddenly a voice coming from the sea:
"Come home soon, hurry!"早く帰って来い.
And the fish on the net replied
"Please come and get me, fast!"迎えに来てくれ.
And right then a Tsunami rolled in and destroyed the whole village.


In the 島尻郡 Shimajiri district, a ningyo 人魚 (dugong)
具志頭のギーザという泉に富盛村の真境名阿母ら3人が参拝に行った。内1人が月のもので汚れた着物を泉で洗ったところ、海からの津波により3人とも溺死した。

In the 賀茂郡 Kamo district
マキヤという屋号の家の先祖が大津波に遭い、家ごと流されたとき、ノロタ(海鰻)のすがって助かった。以来その家では鰻を食わない。

In 下田市 Shimoda town comes a shiroi hige no roojin 白いひげの老人
下田の町の米屋に白いひげの老人が来て「津波が来るから下田富士に逃げろ」という。米屋が町の人に伝えても、誰も信じなかった。米屋は母を連れて下田富士に逃げると、津波が来た。老人はまた現れて「また大きいのが来るから家に帰るな」といい、津波の中を光になって飛んでいった。老人は波切り地蔵の化身だった。

原氏某は宝永の頃から三弦で有名な人物だった。ある日彼は品川の楼に行ったときに、三弦の音が常に変わっているのを聞いて、津波がくるのを予見し、一座の友を誘ってあわてて帰った。するとほどなく津波が押し寄せて多くの人家、人命が失われたという。

soba 蕎麦 と 伝説 Legends about buckwheat


Daruma eating buckwheat noodles

Soba is a type of thin Japanese noodle made from buckwheat flour. It is served either chilled with a dipping sauce, or in hot broth as a noodle soup.
Soba grows in regions not suited for rice, so it is the "food of the poor" in mountain regions.

akuboshi 悪星 "unauspicious star"
In the middle of May an unauspicious "bad star" appeared in the sky in the South. Everybody was afraid, because they were told whoever looked at this star will die.
But they also said that if you eat Soba right after that, you will not die.

Around the 25th day of the 1st month in the year 1733 (享保18年1月25日頃) it suddenly rained grains from the sky in the Ise and Kinki region. People picked them up, made flour from them and ate them as dumplings.
On the 24th day of the 2nd month the same happened in Kyoto, from 京都四条河原 Shijo toward 松原 Matsubara.
And again it rained barley 麦 mugi and 蕎麦 Soba from the sky, but someone picked the grains up and they only looked like such.
And in the text year, there was a great famine.
Whatever it was, also known from the history of China, when it rained from the sky, next year was a famine 飢饉.

If you peel of the husk of buckwheat seeds and place them near a swamp in winter, the next year there will be a lot of dojoo 泥鰌 Dojo loaches to eat.

Once a fox had devastated the fields and grandpa got angry, He waited for the fox to kill him. When a person passed by, he saw grandpa with tucked hems, stepping on the buckwheat plants in the field. But he was in fact bewitched by the fox and thought he was stepping in the water. So just as well, he was lucky someone came by and woke him up.

In a version from 大沼郡 Onuma district, 金山町 Kaneyama, it was a man trying to harvest buckwheat who was bewitched by a fox thinking he was wading in a deep river.

to ward off 鬼 Oni demons
People offer dumplings made of rice, buckwheat or millet flour on January 31. They make these offerings to the 神仏 deities of Shinto and Buddhism at the entrance of their home or near a window. These dumplings are called "oni no medama 鬼の目玉"eyeballs of a demon" and ward off all evil.
If a demon comes and sees these huge eyeballs, he becomes afraid and runs away.

昔、夜遅くに若い女を見て狐が化けていると正体を見破った男は、次に大入道に会い、狐と見破る。家に着くと狐がいたので叩いているとそれは雨着だった。またある時には、大水が出たと思わされて、蕎麦畑を裸であるかされたりもした。

Sometimes people get bewitched by a fox and run around naked in what they think is the sea or a river, but in fact they are trampling in their 蕎麦畑 buckwheat fields.

Above the bridge that spanned the flowing canal, a soba shop stood whose paper lantern had the words “28” written on it in thick, bold characters. Even when all the fires were put out, and the street was in darkness, this lantern would continue to shine, without candle or oil.

Sometimes a bewitched person walks around the buckwheat field with the robes all tucked up high, thinking he is walking in a river. The foxes also eat their aburaage 油揚げ Tofu lunch.

Once upon a time on a rainy evening, an old man came to the temple. The priest was just grilling black stones, and he asked the man where he lived. Then the old man asked to stay over night, since it was already dark. The old monk had already eaten, but he had some Soba dumplings left and offered to grill them on the blue stone. Then suddenly he threw one hot stone at the knee of the old man. The old man shouted and run away very fast.
Next morning the priest found a hole in the valley, where an old Badger was dead from burning wounds. And it was not burned at the knee, but in the genitals.
The name of this area is 玉落谷 "Valley were the Balls had fallen down".

In the Soba Yokocho there lives 折原岩之助 Orihara Iwanosuke.
小石川諏訪町蕎麦切横町に住む折原岩之助が、文政9年3月16日に見た夢によると、神田小柳町あたりの道具屋に希代の霊剣があるとのことだった。同じ夢を数度みたので同月21日に道具屋を尋ねるととても古びた剣があった。そこで購入した晩の夢に、甲冑の上に白い装束を着た人物が出現し、様々な剣の徳を述べ、夢は覚めたという。小倉五郎源宗広の銘があり、470年ほど前の剣だったという。

In the early Edo period the daughter of 八代目市佐衛門 Ichizaemon visited 松山市の椿神社 the Tsubaki Shrine in Matsuyama, she had the strings of her geta in five beautiful colors.
When the founder of 長門屋 Nagatoya saw this, he got the idea for the Somen noodles.

Masaoka Shiki wrote the following:

In the 犬山市 Inuyama region
There are many legends about the 老松 old pine tree of 白山神社 Hakusan Jinja an the five dragons in its roots.
If someone touched this root, he himself or someone of his family would get ill.
Once after a typhoon it lost many branches, and people took them home secretely, but they all died soon after.



But the local fishermen got blessings from the five-colored Dragon Deities.

Once there was a real bad guy in 上総国福津 Kazusa no Kuni, called じゃじゃ庄右衛門 Jaja Shoemon. But one day he changed his ways and became a follower of Amida, reciting the Nenbutsu prayer. Then one day he got ill. said good bye to all his friends and slipped away to paradise.
Seven days later it rained flowers of five colors from the sky.

Goshikidai is a plateau which juts into the Seto Inland Sea, located to the West of Takamatsu City.
The name "goshiki" means "five colors" and it was so named for the five peaks which are respectively red, yellow, blue, black, and white in color.
From this location, visitors can look out over the Seto Inland Sea and the Seto Ohashi bridge, and the Goshikidai Skyline is a great road for a scenic drive. There are a number of facilities on Goshikidai designed to help visitors get the most out of their encounters with the abundant nature on the plateau.
Furthermore, it is said that a great fire that occurred here over one thousand years ago was the cause of the unusual stone, sanukite, to be produced. This stone makes a beautiful tone when struck, and for this reason it is also known as kankan stone. The stone has been made into musical instruments for its beautiful tone, and is loved by musicians and used in concerts worldwide.

At the Temple Muro-Ji 室生寺の境内 along the river 室生川 the saint 慶円上人 Keien (1140 - 1223) once passed. At the riverside a female Dragon King 善女竜王 waited for him. He asked her to show her real features and after some discussion, she turned into a black cloud and showed her right hand. It had long nails of about 3 cm in five colors.
Since than the riverbank is called 爪出が淵 Tsumedegafuchi.

役行者 En no Gyoja and hitotsume-gaeru 一つ目蛙 a frog with one eye
役行者の母の刀良売が奥田の蓮池の堤で療養していたとき、五色の霧が立ちこめて池の中から蓮の茎が伸びて2つの白蓮が咲き、金色の蛙が鳴いた。刀良売が萱を1本投げると、霧も蓮も消え、蛙も褐色に変わって一つ目になってしまった。刀良売は病が重くなり、ついには他界した。以来奥田蓮池の蛙は一つ目蛙だという。

Once upon a time in Oshima Island 昔々、大島の泉津村の代官は租税の取り立てなど、すべてにおいて暴虐だったため、正月24日の夜、村の若者25人に切り殺された。若者たちはその夜のうちに波治加麻明神の大木を切り倒して造った丸木舟で村を逃れたが、暴風で舟が転覆して、皆死んでしまった。その後、毎年正月24日の夜中には25人の霊が丸木舟に乗り、五色の機を立てて村を訪れるという。

After his body was burned, they found many shari 舎利 sacred bones. His hands holding the 水晶の数珠 crystal rosary were still visible, the rosary sparkled in five colors.

In the year 1825 on the 15th day of the 8th month, the writer 外岡北海 Sotooka Hokkai passed along the Koishikawa Denzu-In, when clouds in five colors passed all over the sky. When people asked where these clouds came from, he said they had already been there when he reached the spot.

Kobo Daishi opened the Sacred Place of Yudono in the Year 807, on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month 大同二年四月八日.

There are also prayer groupd on Day Eight, 八日講, in Yamagata, Fukushima and Nagano, related to the rituals of Yudono.

This is a day to spent quietly and not use the word to make sure nothing evil will happen.
Yoka-Sama is also seen as 疫病神 Yakubyogami. He has either very big eyes or only just one like a Yokai.
Hitotsume Kozo一つ目小僧 is said to be the messenger of this Yakubyogami.

旧師走8日と2月8日を八日様といい、門口にスイノウ、目籠等を掛ける.
。この日にはオコトノカミという目の大きい(1つ目とも言う)怪物厄病神が各戸を覗き手帳に厄病を病ませる人の名前を記入して歩く。だから覗かれないようにスイノウ、目籠等をかけておどかす。疫病神は自分よりも目の大きいものがいるというので逃げ帰る。

APPEARANCE:
Gashadokuro are skeletal giants which wander around the countryside in the darkest hours of the night. Their teeth chatter and bones rattle with a “gachi gachi” sound, which is this yokai’s namesake. If they should happen upon a human out late on the roads, the gashadokuro will silently creep up and catch their victims, crushing them in their hands or biting off their head.

ORIGIN:
Soldiers whose bodies rot in the fields and victims of famine who die unknown in the wilderness rarely receive proper funerary rites. Unable to pass on, their souls are reborn as hungry ghosts, longing eternally for that which they once had. These people die with anger and pain in their hearts, and that energy remains long after their flesh has rotted from their bones. As their bodies decay, their anger ferments into a powerful force – a grudge against the living – and this grudge is what twists them into a supernatural force. When the bones of hundreds of victims gather together into one mass, they can form the humongous skeletal monster known as the gashadokuro.
Too large and powerful to be killed, gashadokuro maintain their existence until the energy and malice stored up in their bodies has completely burnt out. However, because of the large amount of dead bodies required to form a single one, these abominations are much rarer today than they were in the earlier days, when wars and famine were a part of everyday life.

LEGENDS:
The earliest record of a gashadokuro goes back over 1000 years to a bloody rebellion against the central government by a samurai named Taira no Masakado. His daughter, Takiyasha-hime, was a famous sorceress. When Masako was eventually killed for his revolt, his daughter continued his cause. Using her black magic, she summoned a great skeleton to attack the city of Kyoto.
Her monster is depicted in a famous print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi.

Others say a fox has to become 800 years or 300 years, before shape-shifting into a human.

A fox might place a skull on his head and pray to the 北斗七星 big dipper. The skull is a 霊天蓋 ritual canopy for the fox. But he has to practise so the skull will not slip from his head. If he can manage to see the Big Dipper 100 times, he will gain the power to shape-shift into a human.

In the year 1676 there was enormous flooding in the area of Fukazawa and a lot of landslides happened.
Out of one of them came a large skull of about one meter with huge teeth.

Oodate Jiroo 大舘次郎 Odate Jiro

Once the blind poet 高野蘭亭 Takano Rantei (1704 - 1757) wanted to get hold of a skull cup. When he begun looking for it at the 大館次郎の塚 Mound of Odate Jiro, suddenly the fine weather changed, it became cloudy and soon a huge storm and thunder filled the sky.

The monument was erected in memory of Odate Jiro (大館次郎) and eleven of his followers. (The inscription incorrectly adds the character "又" to his name:又次郎.)
In 1333, when imperial troops headed by Nitta Yoshisada (新田義貞, 1301-38) attacked Kamakura, Odate, a general of the Nitta forces, rushed to Gokurakujizaka Pass with a large number of his soldiers. Evading a hail of logs and rocks from both sides of the pass, they broke through the Hojo (北条) defense and headed towards Yuigahama, where the enemy awaited.
Faced with a counterattack by the troops of Honma Yamashirozaemon (本間山城左衛門) of the Hojo side, Odate's army was forced to retreat to Gokurakuji (極楽寺), where Odate and most of his men were killed near the Inasegawa River (稲瀬川).
In the end, only eleven of Odate's men were left, but rather than give up and surrender they chose to take their own lives with their own swords.
The eleven are said to have been buried here, and a statue of Eleven-faced Kannon (十一面観音菩薩, Juichimen Kannon) was erected to their memory under the name Juichininzuka, "Mound of the Eleven." Generally, tsuka (塚, also pronounced zuka) refers to a tombstone, but this particular tsuka was erected later as a memorial.

Most of the stories of ghosts are about people becoming ghosts and appearing as a skull.
One of the oldest records is the Nihon Ryooiki 日本霊異記 Nihon Ryoiki.
宇多院 Emperor Uda (867 - 931) made an official visit to 河原院 Kawara no In (the official residence of Minamoto no Tooru 源融 Toru (822 - 895).
The late owner of this Kawara residence, Toru, appeared clad in 衣冠 formal robes as a ghost to greet the visitor.

栖軽は雄略天皇の命令で雷を撃ち鎮めたが、その死後に彼の忠信を賞賛して、雷が落ちたところに碑を建てた。その碑には取雷栖軽之墓とあったが、この雷が怒って鳴り落ちたところ、逆に捕らえれたという。

敏達天皇の御代に、一人の農夫が田の水を引きに出掛けて、雷雨に会い、木の下で休んでいると、落雷した。雷は子供のような姿で現れ、私を助けてくれれば汝に子を授けようといった。農夫が望み通りにすると、雷は昇天し、後になって子を得たという。

日本霊異記には美濃の狐という大力の家の元祖の事跡が記されている。最近まで同じような家筋が諸国に10ほどあったという。

『日本霊異記』によると、一匹の狐がまんまとある男の妻になりすましていたが、犬に吠えられて正体をあらわし、逃げ出したという。

and his grave 一ツ目小僧の墓所
His grave is said to be here in the mountains. During the early Meiji period, an old grandpa wanted to clear the place and opened it. He dug out some human bones and re-arranged them anew, because there have been roots of 山芋 mountain yam (Dioscorea japonica) going through one eye of the skull.

There are other regions in Japan who claim his grave is there.

花山院が頭風を病ませられた時、阿部清明は、院は生前行者で、大峯の某の宿で入滅なさった。前世の功徳で天子に生まれなさったが、前世の髑髏が岩の間に落ちて挟まっているために頭を病まれるから、髑髏を取り出し広いところに置けという。その通りにしたところ、頭風は癒えたという。

寛文12年9月初め、今厨子というところが夜な夜な光った。その光を地を4尺程掘れば、髑髏のような大きさの少し平たい物が出てきた。臭気がするので捨てると光も無くなった。

昔、ナーマ屋の爺(アヤ)が海辺で魔神に出会った。乱れた頭髪、首に毒蛇と髑髏の首鬘をかけ、髑髏の瓔珞を腰につけ、赤い褌をした一つ目の大男だったという。爺に水を乞うたのでそれを与えたところ、魔除けの呪法を授けてくれた。七五三縄を(チビナー縄)張り、「ナーマヤーヌ・マリビキドー」と唱えればよいというもので、それを村人に伝え、難を逃れたといわれている。

大原町千代ヶ丸 Chiyogamaru

元禄15年4月24日、千代が丸観音堂の修復を行った際、地中より長さ9尺8寸、高さ2尺9寸、奥行き3尺あまりの石櫃が出てきた。中には髑髏が2つと剣2本、刀、鉾、矢の根などが入っていた。髑髏は頭周り3尺7寸、頭から顎まで1尺4寸あった。

阿波勝浦郡の大はら浦にある、千代が丸観音堂の修復に伴い、その地から非常に大きな唐櫃が掘り出され、その中には大変大きな髑髏が2つ入っていた。また剣や鉾や矢ノ根もあり、そのどれもが大きく長かったという。元禄15年4月24日の出来事である。

tatari たたり a curse
江戸のはとり坂(服部坂)に、しうりん院という禅寺があった。ある日後ろの山から理由ありげなどくろを掘り出してきて、位牌堂において供養した。しかし7日経った夜に、どくろは他の位牌とともに堂内で踊り歩き、院主は寝られず病気になった。そこで同門の僧が見舞いに来て、どくろを庭で踏みつぶしたところ、祟りはなくなったという。

享保12年6月6日、激しい雷の最中、吹上げの御殿に異形のしゃれこうべが落ちてきた。その頭の長さ6寸幅は8寸、眼の穴は2つあり、くちばしの様な口があり、歯が上唇のみに生えていた。どのような魚鳥の骨であるのかはわからなかった。

後白河法皇は前世で熊野の蓮華坊という山伏であったが、谷へ落ちて落命した。その後、柳が生えて髑髏を貫いたために、風で柳が揺れるたびに法皇は頭痛を病む。ゆえにその髑髏を埋めて柳で三十三間堂の棟木にした。このことから、蓮華王院の名がありながら頭痛山平癒寺とさへ呼ぶようになった。この縁起は花山院の話を元にしたものであるだろう。

APPEARANCE:
A hahakigami is a tsukumogami which takes up residence in a broom. They can sometimes be seen on cold, windy late autumn mornings, sweeping wildly at the blowing leaves.

ORIGIN:
Long ago, brooms were not household cleaning tools, but actually holy instruments used in ritual purification ceremonies. They were used to on the air in a room or area in order to purify it and sweep out any evil spirits and negative energy that might be lingering there. Like any tool used for many years, a broom which reaches a very old age becomes a perfect home for a spirit — perhaps even more so in the case of a hahakigami because of the ritual nature of its origin.



Hahakigami
are used also as magical charms for safe and quick childbirth. Because brooms are used to “sweep out” evil energy, a hahakigami acts as a sort of totem to “sweep out” the baby from its mother safely.
They are also used as charms to keep guests from overstaying their visit. Anyone who has stayed beyond their welcome might also be “swept out” by the power of the hahakigami.

ある商人が箒の神の堂に泊まった晩、箒の神の代わりに出産に立ち会った臼の神が、女の子が生まれたが18で近江のなまずのえじきになると伝える。その娘は商人の子だった。大きくなった娘が伊勢参りに行くので、商人は弁当と饅頭を買う金を与えた。近江の湖で高坊主が現れたが、娘は高坊主に弁当と買った饅頭をあげたため、83まで生きられることになったという。

a 乞食 poor beggar woman gave birth to a baby girl under a bridge.
A person passing over the bridge heard the Deity of the Broom and the Deity of the Toilet talking, saying that whoever would get married to this girl would become the richest man in the village. So this girl was lucky, got married and lived to a long and rich life.

Once a traveling businessman stayed over night in a temple of 荒神様 Kojin Sama. There the Hokigami came along and invited Kojin Sama to come and assist with a birth tonight, but Kojin Sama refused. The Hokigami went alone to help. When he came back he told that the child had been born safely, but its life would be short, because on this and that day a Kappa (Enko エンコ) would come and get it.
The businessman thought this was about his own child. On the day when the life of the child was supposed to come to an end the child went to the river with her old nurse. But the nurse was in fact the Kappa, took the child by the hand and wanted to jump into the river. Just in this moment the father gave a loud ring with a sacred bell. So the Kappa fled in haste and the child was saved.

In the Nagasaki Prefecture, the kaika怪火;カイカ (ghost lights) that appear above water are called this, and in the funayūrei船幽霊 (boat spirits) in the Yamaguchi Prefecture and the Saga Prefecture are also called this. In the western part of Japan, they are said to be those who died at sea and are attempting to capture people to join them.In Tsushima, they are also called "kaika of ayakashi (ayakashi no kaika)," and appear on beaches in the evening, and it would look like as if a child were walking in the middle of the fire. On coasts, kaika would appear as mountains and obstruct one's path, and are said to disappear if one doesn't avoid the mountain and tries to bump into it intently.

There is the folk belief that if a live sharksucker (Echeneis naucrates), an actual fish, gets stuck to the bottom of the boat, it would not be able to move, so ayakashi is a synonym for this type of fish.

In the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi by Sekien Toriyama, the ayakashi is represented by a large sea snake, but this may actually be an ikuchi, sea snake or octopus.

昔、須佐の海に大蛸が住んでいた。ある少女が毎日その足を切って売り、暮らしをたてていた。8本目の足を切りに行った時、遂に大蛸の為海中へまきこまれて死んでしまった。しょうじゃは少女が訛って、がまは水中の大きな穴と言われている。

Once a huge Tako took a nap on a rock. When Yasaimon 八左兵門 (Yazaemon) saw this, he cut off one leg each day. On Day 8 he wanted to cut off the last leg, but the huge Tako threw him into the sea with it and then continued his nap.
Since that time, the huge Octopus is called ザイモン蛸 Yazaimon in this area.

Once upon a time a huge serpent and a huge octopus had a fight and the huge octopus threw the serpent into the sea - so he had won! Ten years later there was oil oozing out of the sea where the serpent had perished. A fisherman found the oil, threw out his load of rice and hauled the bones of the snake into his ship. He sold it as medicine in Osaka and became a rich man.

Once a fisherman caught an octopus and killed it, so the curse of this animal came over the fisherman. To appease it, the fisherman had the carving made and prayed for forgiveness.

人蛸 チュドホ "human Tako"
白浜に大蛸がいるときにはとらないものだという。妻が夫に白浜にいる人蛸を捕ってくるよう頼み、夫が捕ろうとしたところ、人蛸が男を一掴みにし、手二つを鼻の穴に、手二つで帆を吹かして上に捧げて行ってしまった。

ケンムン Kenmun - Kenmono
ケンムンと仲良しになったある人が、一番恐いものを尋ねられ、お金と答えた。一方ケンムンは、ヤツデマル(蛸)が恐いと言った。ある日、その人がケンムンにやけどを負わすと、ケンムンは仕返しにたくさんの金を小屋に投げ込んだ。その人は、蛸を捕ってきて、小屋にかけたため、ケンムンは二度と来なくなり、その人は大金持ちになった。

砂糖小屋に泊まっているとケンムンが来て火にあたった。ケンムンが「何が一番怖いか」と聞くので金が怖いと答えた。ケンムンは蛸が怖いと言っていた。毎日ケンムンが来て邪魔なので蛸を投げると驚いて逃げ、翌日金を沢山置いていった。

海辺によく現れ相撲を挑んでくる。頭に皿があり、割れると霊力を失う。初めて海からケンモンが上陸した時蛸に襲われ難儀した。ガジュマルの木に住むことを許されたのでそこに住んでいる。

ケンムンの特徴は、体が小さく子供のようで、赤い毛がはえていて、ウスクかガジアルの木にすむ。顔は猫のようだとも犬のようだともいわれる。足は長く、竹のように細い。漁が大好きで魚の目玉だけ食べる。相撲が好きでよく人に挑んでくる。7月頃海から山へ登っていく。蛸が苦手。ケンムンが家に着くと裕福になるといわれている。

文化9年の6月に、石地町に住む文四郎とその友達3人とともに、近くの賽の河原と呼ばれる海浜で遊んでいたところ、石の六地蔵から大きな蛇が出てきた。撃ち殺そうと追いかけると、蛇は海中には入り逃げたが、結局捕まえて見てみると、7本足の蛸に変化していたという。

ブナガが毎晩家を訪れ、材木を運んだり家の手伝いをしてくれる。しかしそのような交際が嫌になった家の人が、この世で一番嫌いな蛸を投げつけると二度と訪れなくなった。それ以降毎年8月は蛸を飾りお祓いをするという。


キジムナー,アカガミ kijimunaa akagami
昔あるお婆さんが海で蛸をとっていた。その蛸はキジムナー蛸であったので、他の人は誰もとれなかった。そこへキジムナーがきて、「どうしておまえはその蛸をとるのか」と訪ねた。お婆さんはアカガミという神で、キジムナーより格が上であることを話したが、キジムナーは納得できず、奪い合いになった。しかし最後はキジムナーがあきらめて「あなたには負けたよ」と帰っていった。

おじいさんが夜に蛸取りに行って、キジムナーと友達になったが、しつこいので蛸を取ってぶつけたらそれ以来、来なくなった。

薪割がキジムナーと友達になり、毎日昼は山へ、夜は海へと行くうちに、眠くて仕方なくなり、斧で頭を殴り殺そうとしたり、蛸を投げつけようとしたりするが失敗する。怒ったキジムナーは薪割りを引き裂いて殺してしまう。

薪割りの男がキジムナーと友達になり、昼夜連れ回されて疲れて仕方ないので、キジムナーを追い払おうとキジムナーの嫌う蛸を投げつけた。キジムナーは怒って男を殺した。

キジムン,キジムナー
セーマ、ブナンガヤーとも言う。木の精である。子供の形であらわれ全身毛で覆われている。漁が上手で、仲良くするといつでも魚が食え、金持ちにもなれる。蛸を嫌う。旧8月10日は妖怪日で全ての妖怪が出る日とされる。

Once upon a time there lived a skilfull fisherman named 甚平 Jinbei.

昔、甚平という漁師が住んでいた。魚を捕ることが巧みで近隣の者は皆知っていた。ある日甚平が岩の近くで魚釣りをしていると、急に船が傾いた。見れば大きな蛸の足が船縁を掴んでいた。甚平はその足を包丁で切って持って帰った。その味を覚えた甚平が翌日も岩へ行ったところ、その日も蛸が現れた。こうした日が5日続き、8本の足が3本にまで減った日に、甚平はこの蛸を捕ってやろうと包丁の代わりに縄を持っていった。それきり甚平は帰らず、主のいない船が夕方に浦へ流れ着いた。村人達はきっと蛸に食われたのだろうと噂した。それ以来その岩を甚平岩と呼ぶようになった。

甚平という下手な魚釣りがいた。甚平は正直者であったので、神様が1本づつ蛸の足を切らせるようにした。ところが切っていく途中で甚平が欲心を起こしたので、神様は腹を立て蛸に甚平を殺させた。

Musashibo Benkei was called Oniwakamaru - "demon child, ogre child" in his youth.
His mother was pregnant for 18 months with him and when the baby was born, it has already hair and teeth.
He was so strong he could fight against 200 men and win.
Since he was such a problem, he was given to Western Part of the mountain monestery at Hieizan 比叡山西塔. At that time he was called 西塔鬼若丸 "Saito Oniwakamaru".

A villager caught a huge carp, but the animal had legs and fas in fact a salamander. It is called "hazekoi". After he caught this animal, suddenly the water supply of the village became less and less. It was the curse of the Salamander.
Now people never catch any salamander and pray at the local shrine for its well-being.
And the greatful salamander now shape-shifts into real carp every year to grant them a good fishing harvest.

In the year 1028 a person named 角田将監 Kakuda Shogen was hit by a huge typhoon. The big 大榎 huckberry tree in his garden had fallen down, so be begun to dig a well in this place. After a short while, clear water welled up from the ground and a huge higoi 緋鯉 golden red carp showed up. This was an auspicious sign. When the village headman 持田 Mochida went to Tokyo to report the event.
奇瑞と言って、神主の持田某と京都に上ったところ、時の天皇に禁鯉宮の勅額を賜ったうえ井戸を掘ることと鯉の合火を禁じられた。後に生活に困難を来したために禁制は解かれたが、氏子は今でも鯉を神聖視している。

In 大王町 Daio Town
Once a family had a lot of bad luck, one after the other, and finally asked a priest fro the 日蓮宗 Nichiren sect for advise. He told them one of their ancestors had once felled a pine at 三島山 Mishimayama and killed a serpent. Now they suffer from the curse of this animal, but when they started to venerate the serpent, things got better.

While building a road and scratching away at a mountain slope with a bulldozer, the home of a serpent got destroyed. Soon after there were many ill people in the village, so they begun to venerate the
hebigami蛇神 "Serpent Deity" and things got better.

In 大王町 Daio Town
there was an old couple doing their farming work near 城山 Shiroyama. They were talking about weather a deity would live in the pond or not. While they were talking, the water of the pond begun to swirl in a furious whirl.
Since then they begun to venerate the "Deity of the Pond", which was in fact the Snake Deity.

Jizoo 地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu - Shian Jizo and Nakiri 波切

In 大王町 Daio Town
around 1825 in the villages of 船越村と波切村 Funakoshi and Nakiri there arose a fight about a whale who had washed ashore. The headman of Funakoshi insisted in his claim, even by cutting his guts and committing 切腹 Harakiri. Now there is a Jizo Statue to venerate in place of this headman. But the family which had placed the statue was struck by misfortune. When they asked a diviner about their problem, they were told that the statue faced toward Namikiri and Jizo was angry about that. So they turned the statue to face in the opposite direction.
If children behave bad or do mischief in the presence of this Jizo statue, there will be no good catch for the fishermen (fusagu フサグ(不漁).

In 志摩町 Shima Town
there is a stone Buddha, also called
shiobotoke 潮ボトケ "Tidal Buddha" or nurebotokeぬれボトケ "Wet Buddha".
In the early Meiji period, the 弥吉老人 Old Man Yakichi had a special dream:
"I am the Jizo Bosatsu of this place. By a turn of fate I arrived here at this place. If someone prays to me with all their heart, I will heal any illness they have from the hips down to the feet.
I will sleep in the sea water and thus help to cleanse the sins of the people, so do not replace my stone to a higher place."
The head priest 児玉芳山 Kodama Yoshiyama of the temple 潮音寺 Choon-Ji in Shima decided to have a hospital here.

There is a temple of the same name, 潮音寺 Choon-Ji, in Toba 鳥羽市答志町.
It has three Kannon Statues of three different periods, Heian, Kamakura and Muromachi.

fishermen make huge straw sandals of the size of one Tatami mat every year and float it on sea, together with sekihan 赤飯や酒 ritual red rice and Sake. There is a Demon living on a reef close by and when he sees the big Tatami, he thinks that there must be a huge Demon living on land. This stops him from coming to the shore and do harm to the village.

The 鰹船 bonito fishermen once found a floating dead body near Oki but did not bother to haul it up with their nets. A few days later they saw a huge octopus (7、8尺四方) and more strange things begun to happen. Eventually all of the crew drowned, only the one man who had seen the dead body first survived.

sakaki 榊 と伝説 Legends about the Sakaki tree

Cleyera japonica, the sacred tree of Japanese Shinto.

The Japanese word sakaki is written 榊 with the Kanji character that combines
ki 木 "tree, wood" and kami 神 "spirit, god",
depicting a "sacred tree; divine tree".

Branches of the Sakaki tree are decorated with paper streamers (紙垂 shide) to make ritual purifying wands (玉串 tamagushi).

In 揖斐郡 the Ibi district someone threw a Sakaki branch from the Shrine 上花長神社 /花長上神社 Hananagakami Jinja and it flew all the way to Ichinomiya town to the Shrine 阿豆良神社 Azura Jinja, where it took hold and begun to produce blossoms.

神石郡 Jinseki district (Divine Rok District)

A pilgrim to the Ise Shrine had forgotten a parcel on a rock where he had rested. A villager found it and threw it away. But on the next morning it was back on the rock. This continued for a few days. When he finally opened the parcel there was a Tamagushi inside. Now the family of this villager made the rock their ritual prayer place and venerated the Deity.
Later a member of the family split the rock with a chisel, and red blood begun to flow from the rock. This rock begun to grow little by little every year and soon was as high as the house. It was the Ishigamisan, Ishigami San 石神さん Divine Rock Deity.

昔、榊を折ってくるように言いつけられた継子が、榊の木がわからず折れなかったので説教されて自殺した。それがヤマワロになったという。ヤマワロは人間の真似をし、音を出す。ある人がヤマワロのたくさんいるところの近くにある杉山に薪をとりに行き、夕方に帰ってくると、着物の糸が全部抜け落ちていたことがある。

At the temple 安養寺 Anyo-Ji when someone tries to cut the Sakaki tree, he will become a terrible stomach ache. During the time of the 明治維新 Meiji Restoration a man with a wild temper tried to cut the tree with a sickle, but from the cut red blood begun to flow. The man cried out loudly and held his body in a strong stomach ache.

Once there was a fire at 伊勢神宮 the Grand Ise Shrine around 1825. Suddenly the door of the shrine 荒祭宮 Aramatsuri no Miya opened all by itself. At the 外宮 Geku a Tamagushi begun to bear fruit.

Sakaki Jinja 榊神社 Sakaki Shrine.
During the Sakaki Matsuri 榊祭 Festival, 榊様 Sakaki Sama make a line and walk through the village. When they reach the home of a villager who is thought to be bad by others, they stop and try to enter the home by force. A home where Sakaki Sama has entered will have a death in the family soon after.

千垢離立願は病人が危篤のときに平癒を祈る立願で、一生に一度の立願である。まず海か湖の岸辺を清めて忌竹を立てて注連縄を張り、祭壇を設けて献饌して榊(苧柄とも)の葉を1000枚用意する。神官が祭壇で祈祷し、立願解人が榊葉を分配して首まで水中に入り、沖に向かって平癒を唱えるごとに葉を流す。流した葉が沖へ出れば願いが叶い、磯辺に寄ると凶だといわれている。

Yōkai demon with a horse's head and deer's body



Hyakki Yakō Emaki

A Yokai beast with one horn, sometimes wearing robes like a monk. The head is long like that of a horse and his hands and nails are like the hooves of a deer. It has only one eye, which can jump out of the eye socket.
Its facial expression is that of a human Baka, a fool.

The same 馬鹿 "horse deer" characters that transcribe baka are also used for names in Chinese zoological nomenclature and Japanese mythology.

In the Chinese language, malu 馬鹿 refers to the common "Red Deer; Cervus elaphus", which has a Japanese name of akashika赤鹿 (lit. "red deer").

Mumashika is a rare alternate Japanese reading of 馬鹿 that names "a yōkai demon with a horse's head and deer's body".
The c. 1832 Hyakki Yakō Emaki 百鬼夜行絵巻 "100 Demons' Night Parade Picture Scroll" depicts it with one eye, horse mouth and ears, and deer horn and hooves.

宇和島市 Uwajima town

In 下波村 Shitaba village, the deity ヒダル神 Hidarugami is called
shirami シラミ. They are a kind of misaki ミサキ.
And the local fishermen call it
baka 馬鹿 / バカ .
It comes like a white cloud surrounding a boat and draws it into the ocean.
Baka are the souls of people drowned during shipwrecks. Their souls are appeased at O-Bon and other rituals.
But when the villagers call it Baka, it gets angry and there will usually be a fire soon somewhere.

If children climb this dangerous stone they often fall down and hurt themselves. Sometimes a sword comes out to cut them.
It might be a local diversion of the dialect, hakajunはかじゅん(墓順)- order of the graves and seats of the elders.

From an old 古墳 Kofun tomb there is often a fire coming out, wobbling here and there.
The villagers call it
bakabi (baka no hi) 馬鹿火 "Baka fire", "Baka flames".

sumigama 炭竈 と伝説 Legends about charcoal kilns

Making charcoal was not a specialized work, but most farmers did it in the back woods of their home to use as heating. It was also done during other seasons, when they could sell their charcoal well. It takes about a week to cut the necessary wood and fire it in a special kiln.

Two young boys went to the mountain and did not come back in time. When the villagers went out to search for them, they found them inside the charcoal kiln. When asked what happened, they told about hunting for a squirrel and eventually loosing their sense of space and where they were. So they hid in the kiln and went to sleep there.

This deity dislikes anything connected to giving birth. Therefore after a birth a woman is not allowed to come near the Tatara 鑪. Even now she is not allowed to come near a charcoal kiln.

Yamawaro ヤマワロ Kappa
To prepare the rituals for a new charcoal kiln, the villager needed some 神酒 ritual Sake. So he took some money and a flask for the Sake and went to buy some. On the way he met a Yamawaro and got bewitched by him. He could hardly walk straight any more. Then he saw the cork of the flask being taken off and heard someone drinking. When he came to his senses, there was no sake and all the money had gone.

Once a farmer tried to make charcoal in the forest and slept there near the kiln. But all night a Yamawaro disturbed him, breaking branches from the trees. So the farmer went back to the local shrine 大神宮 and got a special amulet. He placed it near his kiln and since that night, the Yamawaro did not show up any more.

Generally, People should not build their homes or kilns to make charcoal in their commuting way.

The messenger (retainer) of Bishamon was thought of as a centipede (mukade, hyakusoku 百足 ), who also protected the gold mines. Centipedes are said to possess an ability to spot gold mines. Therefore people used to carry centipedes in bamboo tubes when they went to the mountains in search for gold.
The warlords Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin both used a centipede on their flags.

The following reveals the main legend about the huge centipede from Akagi and the snake of Nikko.
The legends from 日光 Nikko and 近江 Omi are very similar.

These two animal deities fought at Senjōgahara 戦場ヶ原 Senjogahara, the "Battlefield" marshland in Nikko.
They were the vassals of the deity of 男体山 Nantaisan in Chuzenji and the deity from 赤城山 Akagiyama.
Now there is an Akanuma 赤沼 "Red swamp" of the blood from the Mukade.
There are other place names relating to these mythological events in Nikko.

Legend has that the gods of two mountains, Mt Nantai and Mt Akagi, fought here over control of
Lake 中善寺湖 Chuzenji-ko.
Nantai was losing so he consulted another god, Kashima Daimyojin, who introduced him to an expert archer called Sarumaru (who was actually one of Nantai’s grandsons). Nantai transformed himself into a white deer to lure Sarumaru out onto the plateau. The gods fought on Senjogahara where Akagi transformed himself into a huge horned centipede and Nantai transformed into a snake.
Sarumaru then shot the centipede through the eye.
Thus the winner was Mt Nantai who now stands watch over the lake.

Since the centipede has "many legs" it will help bring "many legs" to a shop and is thus an amulet for prosperous business.
The Snake Deity is venerated for bringing iron sand to the local river, thus promoting the local iron industry.

gokoo ゴコウ / 蜈蚣 a long-living centipede

Once a man was beginning to reform his home and when tearing down the entrance, they found a name plate with a nail going right through the body of a centipede. The animal was still alive.
But the name plate showed that it was put in place at least 20 years ago !
A similar story is told about a centipede nailed down with a 祈祷札 temple prayer plate.

kaineko 怪猫 the monster cat
Once 老猫 an old cat wanted to do harm to the priest, but he was saved by the crawing of a 義鶏 cock and the cat was killed instead. The cat turned into a 怪猫 monster cat, placed some poisonous animals like centipedes in a water puddle below the roots of an old cedar tree and prepared a poisonous liquid. Then she tried to splash the poison into the soup of the priest, but got caught again. The old cat was burried again properly under the cedar tree and all came to rest. Many years later the buds of a Tsuruurigusa (of the Asarina family) came sprouting out, right of the eye holes of the cat's skull.

上浮穴郡 久万高原町 Kumakogen

Once an old grandpa heard the talk of his neighbours by eavesdropping and now knew where a box of gold was placed. So he went to dig it out. But when he opened it, it was full of snakes and centipedes. The grandpa got angry, went to his neighbours home and threw the contents of the box into the house. But as they dropped down, the snakes and centipedes all turned into golden money.

昔、大内次郎左ェ門が上猿田を開拓した後、高橋兵庫守の子孫がやって来た。そのため高橋は大内氏に正月の挨拶に行かなければならず、快く思っていなかった高橋はある年、大内氏を名剣紫丸で斬った。このときに力余って茶釜も切ったが、以来、紫丸を抜くと必ず柄から大百足が出入りしていたという怪異が止んだ。この大内氏を祭ったのが七人塚だという。

If bitten by a centipede, it is best to scratch some 歯くそ plaque from a tooth and put it on the bite.

Once Sarumaru Daiyu was hunting a white deer and came down all the way to Nikko. The Huge Mukade 大ムカデ from Nikko eats the children of the white deer, this deer mother had called the famous arrow shooter Sarumaru to help.
He put some spittle on his arrow and shot the centipede dead.
Even now if people want to kill a centipede, they use spittle.

Once Hidesato came to a bridge near 粕川村室沢 Kasugawa Machimurozawa. He walked over the bridge,
but it was in fact a huge centipede.

mukade torii ムカデ鳥居 Shrine gate with a centipede.

邑楽郡 Ora district 大泉町 Oizumi

At 赤堀 Akahori every year there was a home where an arrow with white feathers stuck in the front door. This family had to offer the daughter to 小沼 Lake Kono, a volcanic lake.
Then one day Hirosato came by and killed the centipede in the lake. Thus the village was saved.

邑楽郡 千代田町 Chiyoda

Hidesato was born in the hamlet of 舞木 Mogi. Since he later killed the centipede from Akagi, the villagers are not allowed to go to Mount Akagi. If they do, they will have great misfortune.

勢多郡 富士見 Fujimi

At Akagiyama there is the valley 九十九谷 Kujukudani (99 valleys). If there would be one more valley, it would be like the 100 valleys of 高野山 Koyasan in Wakayama. Then the fight between Akagi the Mukade and Nikko the Snake started.
The Mukade from Akagi was bound with オカボの藁 the leaves of okabo, Kabocha pumpkin.
Since that time the believers in 赤城様 the Akagi deity do not grow pumpkin.

The ancestor of the 赤堀家 Akahori family is Hirosato.
After fighting the centipeda at 三上山 Mikamiyama and saving the huge snake, he was married to the daughter of the snake. (Some legends say it was a dragon).

enkoo 猿猴 the local Kappa
Once a Kappa from 吾川郡 the Agawa district was stealing gourds from a field, but one evening he spilled the water from his head plate and could not move any more. A local farmer helped him and poured some water in his plate. To show his gratitude, the Kappa promised that in his home there would never be any 赤百足虫 red centipedes. This came true to our day.

二荒山の神 Futarasan no Kami,万二万三郎 Banjibanzaburo, Banji Banzaburo
The brothers Banji and Banzaburo and the matagiマタギ hunters of Nikko.
The brothers were once hunting for a 白鹿 white deer, but lost the track in the middle of the mountain forest. But there was a small shrine and the Deity of 二荒山 Futaarayama appeared. The Deity asked them to do something about the dangerous centipede from Mount Akagi. The God had taken the shape of a white deer to lead the two hunters. When they saw the centipede, each one of them shot one arrow in one eye of the animal and thus killed it.
For their brave deed they got permission to hunt in any forest of Japan - at least that is the legend told by 日光派のマタギ the special Matagi hunters of Nikko.

In a dispute between the goddess of Mount Nikko and the god of Mount Akagi, Banzaburo helped the goddess by shooting out the eye of the Akagi god, who was incarnated as a huge snake (or a huge centipede in some versions of the story).
In return for his meritorious deed, the goddess gave him a scroll granting him the right to hunt in all mountains of the land.

tori no haka 鶏の墓 the grave of a rooster
Similar to the one told in Aomori, Hachinohe, about a monster cat.
寛文年間(1661~1673),宗禅時住職が次のような夢を見た。
「自分は檀家の某家で飼われていた鶏である。某家の飼っている古猫が一族を毒殺しようとしていたので,私は毎夜鳴いて警告したが,主人は夜鳴きをする鶏は縁起が悪いといって私を殺して川に捨ててしまった。私は今六郷堰の杭の間を漂っている。主人にこのことを知らせてほしい。」住職が翌朝六郷堰に行ってみると,確かに杭の間に鶏の亡骸が浮いている。住職は急いで某家を訪れ,夢の告げを話した。その時大きな黒猫が駆け込んできて汁鍋の上を飛び越えていったが,その拍子に尻尾の先を鍋の中に漬けていった。これに気付いた和尚が家人に猫のあとをつけさせると,猫は竹薮の中で竹の切り株に尻尾を漬けていた。切り株の中ではトカゲ・ムカデ・ハンミョウ・毒蛾などが腐っていた。毒汁を溜めた場所は,一説では愛宕神社下の断崖の中腹,古杉の根元の洞の中だとも言う。主人は鶏に恩を仇で返してしまった事を悔い,供養碑を建てた。

The families of 脇坂甚六郎家 Wakisaka and 三浦甚吉家 Miura venerate Bishamonten.
Therefore they are not allowed to kill any centipedes in their home.
12月31日の晩から正月2日の晩まで、脇坂甚六郎家と三浦甚吉家の当主は脇坂甚六郎家の地神としてまつられている毘沙門堂にお籠りをし、正月3日にはムラの人びとが集まって、毘沙門堂の堂押しが行われる。昔、脇坂家の先祖甚六郎の昼寝の夢に毘沙門天が現れて月布施に連れて行くように告げたので、毘沙門天を船に乗せて二度ヶ浜へ上陸し、屋敷内に堂を建てて安置した。商売繁盛のご利益で参拝する人は多い。また、当家では百足を殺すことは禁忌とされている。

Hidesato killed the huge centipede from ニガミ山 Nigamiyama by putting spittle on it.

Fishermen on the boat are now allowed to pronounce the words for 蛇や百足 snake and centipede. If they have to say something about a snake, they use the word nagaナガ "the long thing".

Once there was a huge centipede of almost 6 meters long (長さ3間余り) and a diameter of about 3 cm (直径約1寸).
It was shown as 見世物 a great rarity to the people

俵藤太秀郷が瀬田の橋で三上山の百足を撃ったというが、瀬田と三上山は距離が遠い。このことを近江の人に尋ねると、百足の住んでいた山は、瀬田から1里ほど離れた所の小山であると伝えられているという。

Hidesato eventually killed the huge centipede that was threatening the female dragons at the 竜宮 Dragon Palace.
As a reward the servant of the Dragon, a Kappa わっぱ(童)delivered to him a special bale of rice (くびり俵 kubire tawara) and some shakudoo 赤銅 copper




The huge centipede had wrapped its body seven times around 三上山 Mount Mikamiyama.
But Hidesato eventually killed it.
Then he cut its body in three parts. The head fell at the village of 浮気 Fuke, the body at 勝部 Katsube and the tail at 瀬田 Seta. Each village burned the part. But the centipede also put a curse on these villages. So they made huge torches in the form of its head, body and tail and burned them again during the yearly festival. This custom has been cut off in Seta, but is still going on in Fuke and Katsube.

but Hidesato killed it to help the large snake.

Once the young Tabi-Oni lost his Tabi and went on a long trip to find them again. But after more than a few hundred years he had still not found them. Eventually horns grew on his head and he became a full-blown Oni.
Nowadays young people worry more about a fashionable pattern than about the Tabi themselves.
So the journey of Tabi-Oni continues to our day.

At the pass 御園峠 Mizono Toge there is the grave of 望月右近太夫 Mochizuki Ukon Daiyu. He had been to the pass and for some reason killed one of the local people. An old woman from the village said she would help him flee and gave him some gold to put in his Tabi to protect him from the mountain bandits.
But later he was killed by the locals and they took the gold out of his Tabi.
The family of the old woman was cursed for many generations.

Once a man walked alone on a full-moon night, when a woman approached him. She was wearing white Tabi, a formal 袴 Hakama skirt and carried an umbrella, although it was not raining. When she came closer, she disappeared and only the sound of her steps was to be heard. The man realized he had been tricked by an Itachi weasel.

Izumi Shikibu 和泉式部
Once upon a time, an old couple without children went to the Kannon Hall to pray for offspring. The temple is located in 和泉村 Izumi village.
The priest from the temple 福泉寺 Fukuzen-Ji (Auspicious Spring Temple) told them they would get a child. They stayed over night at the temple, when they suddenly heard the voice of a baby. A mother deer was giving milk to a human baby! So the old couple took the child home and reared her as their own. She grew up to a most beautiful girl, but she had only two toes, like a deer, and were quite different from human feet.
This child was no other than the poetess Izumi Shikibu. And to hide her feet she had to wear Tabi all her life.

Another version
福泉寺に猪がやってきて仏の茶湯を捨てたのを飲むようになった。あるとき、仏殿の後ろから赤子の鳴く声が聞こえたので見に行くと、件の猪が人の子を産んで乳を飲ませているところだった。暁、藤津郡の塩田庄大黒丸の夢に老僧が現れ、「お前は年頃子を切ったことがある。お前の子が福泉寺の堂の後にいるから取って来いという告げがあり、赤子を取りにいった。これが和泉式部であったという。

Once a beautiful young Samurai came to the Tabi shop. When he showed his leg for a try, they were quite hairy. Then he stumbled and turned into 古だぬき an old Tanuki. He payed two Ryo and disappeared.
But looking closer at the money, it turned into itadori 虎杖 (いたどり) Japanese knotweed, konpachiゴンパチ in the local dialect.
