A man went to the forest with his father to do some work. After a while they took a break. Suddenly a white ball of fire came floating past, with a white tail at the end. Then they heard the sound of a terrible mountain slide, as if someone had felled a huge tree. They hurried home in great fear.
His father told him that they had been on special land where the Shiba Tengu lived and he does not like to be disturbed.

The 仙人 immortal hermit from 金が岳 Mount Kanagatake (1,764 m) named 新左衛門 Shinzaemon
and the Tengu from 茅ヶ岳 Mount Kayagatake (1,703 m) named 江草孫右衛門 Magoemon from Egusa were on bad terms.
The hermit jumped into the sky, made a strong wind and called the clouds. He could also take any human shape he liked.
The hermit sometimes shape-shifted into a ball of fire to show the Tengu that he was still a novice in the field.

Magoemon is a Tengu, others say he is the Hermit from Mount Kayagatake.
Once he climbed the mountain to do some work, and when he came back to his home, three family generations had passed and nobody remembered him.
He was so sad, he went back to the mountain and practised 神通力 to gain divine powers.
山梨県の茅ヶ岳には怪人孫右衛門の伝説があります。怪人は天狗とも仙人ともいいます。前身は上野国（群馬県）の人だという。若いとき両親を亡くし、それ以来飲む打つ買うの放蕩三昧。
とうとう身を持ちくずし、親戚や村の者にも見放され、武田信玄の父信虎の全盛時代（甲府に城を進出させたのが永正16年・1519年）のころ、茅ヶ岳西麓の山梨県北杜市須玉町（旧北巨摩郡須玉町）の江草地区に移住してきたといいます。
ある時山中で仙人が碁を打つのをつい夢中で見ているうち、ふと気がついて家に帰りましたが、すでに人間にして三代もの時が過ぎていて誰も知る人がいなかったという（地元の地誌『須玉町誌』）。
それからというもの孫右衛門は人とうまくつき合えず、ついに世を捨てて山ごもり天狗になったという。室町時代の永正年間（1504～20）のことだとそうです。それからは孫右衛門は、山中をすみかとし、食料のシカや猿、兎やキツネを追って山や谷をかけまわっていたといいます。
江戸時代初期のまでは山仕事をしている人の前に時々あらわれたいう。江戸時代初期の延宝のころ（1673～81）までは山仕事をしている木こりなどの前に時々あらわれ、木の伐採の手伝いをしたり、分けてもらった弁当を喜んで食べていたといいます。
またたばこをやると手のひらに乗せて食べてしまうともいわれます。その後だんだん人と会うのがうとましくなり、時々山の中で見かけることはあっても近づいては来なかったという。
すっかり人々のうわさから遠ざかった正徳年間（1711～1716年）江草地区の村人が山仕事中、異様な怪物が大岩の上に立ってにらんでいます。逆立てた頭髪は真っ白で頬ひげは胸までとどき、大きな目がらんらんと光り、草の葉、木の皮をつづって着物にしていたという。肝をつぶした村人は、命からがらわが家へ逃げ帰えりました。
するとたちまち、大風が吹きはじめ黒雲空を覆い、篠つく雨ととどろく雷鳴に村人は生きた心地がしなかったという。うっかり孫右衛門の昼寝のジャマをして怒らせてしまったらしいのです。
日本の仙人37人を解説した『本朝神仙記伝』（平安時代後期の漢学者大江匡房（おおえのまさふさ）撰録）には、「是全く孫右衛門が、熟眠の場なるを知らず、草を刈て驚かせし故に、斯る変を示したるものならんと、人々語り伝えしとなん。今も時として姿を顕はすことあり。村人恐れて、孫右衛門天狗といふとぞ」とあります。
茅ヶ岳西南の尾根（いまの新左右衛門尾根）には孫右衛門天狗をまつる祠があると聞きますがまだ確認できていません。なお、江戸時代、松平定能（まさ）編集した地誌『甲斐国志』では孫左右衛門になっていますが『本朝神仙記伝』などでは孫右衛門の名で登場しています。
